About the collection
Throughout history, artists have used clay to explore form, texture, volume, and cultural expression.
In the mid-20th century, artists such as Peter Voulkos helped transform ceramics from a primarily craft-based tradition into a recognized form of abstract sculpture. Today, contemporary ceramic artists continue to push the boundaries of the medium, using clay to explore identity, culture, architecture, and social ideas while challenging traditional distinctions between craft, sculpture, and fine art.
