Javier Guadalupe

Javier Guadalupe, born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1976 and based in Miami, is known for three-dimensional textile installations. Rooted in the principles of Kinetic Art, his practice explores movement, depth and perception through meticulously layered fabrics. Executed in relief and sculptural form, the works incorporate specially sourced textiles, primarily from Europe; drawn to their patterns, textures and tactile qualities, he uses them to create a kinetic sense of movement and energy that pulls the viewer in.

He began his artistic career at a young age and has become known for his use of color, texture and form in wall installations. His work explores nature, spirituality and art history, drawing on his experiences growing up in Ecuador and traveling the world, and it brings together elements of historical art, prominent art icons and the knowledge of past cultures with geometric patterns and symbols and with contemporary influences from his exchanges with other artists and art dealers. A notable body of work is the series Other Masters, wall creations that offer vibrant, abstract readings of works by the pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein and by Vincent van Gogh, through which he seeks to preserve the contributions of important artists and keep younger generations engaged with art history.

Guadalupe's training was unconventional. He completed his secondary studies at the San Felipe Neri Educational Unit in Riobamba and earned an engineering degree in Foreign Trade and International Economic Integration from the Equinoctial Technological University, while developing his skills in painting and theater privately with various teachers. A baritone, he has also studied music and film: in 2005 he began his career as a lyrical singer under Maestro Wladimir Lescano Silva, a student of the Chilean singer Blanca Hauser, and his repertoire ranges across German Lied, bel canto, opera and Neapolitan song. In 2011 he represented Ecuador at the Salzburg Voice Festival, giving several performances during the Salzburg Festival in Austria.

His painting has been recognized in Ecuador's national and provincial salons, with first prizes of acquisition at the Provincial Salon of Plastic Arts in Riobamba in 2016 and 2019 and awards at the National Salon of Plastic Arts Magdalena Dávalos, and he was selected for the XLVII National Painting Salon Luis A. Martínez in 2016. He is represented by galleries in the United States, including New York, and in France, and his textile works have been shown at Art Miami and Palm Beach Modern and Contemporary.
