Ernesto Pujol

Ernesto Pujol is a Cuban-born artist, born in Havana, who lives and works in New York. His education spans Spain, Puerto Rico and the United States: an art history certificate from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid (1978), a B.A. in Humanities with a fine arts major, magna cum laude, from the Universidad de Puerto Rico in San Juan (1979), a theology certificate from St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami (1980), a silkscreen seminar at the Art Students' League in San Juan (1985), and graduate work in education at the Universidad Interamericana in San Juan (1984), in art therapy at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (1987) and in media theory at Hunter College in New York (1990).

His solo exhibitions since 2000 carry titles that speak of faith, land, whiteness and mourning. Conversion of Manners was shown at the Museo del Barrio in New York and the Allentown Art Museum in Pennsylvania (2000) and at Heriard-Cimino Gallery in New Orleans (2001); Whiteness at Gian Carla Zanutti Gallery in Milan (2000); Loss of Faith at Ramis Barquet Gallery in New York and Monterrey (2001); El cuerpo de la fe at the Galería Pancho Fierro in Lima (2001); American Fields at the Jersey City Museum, Heriard-Cimino Gallery and Iturralde Gallery in Los Angeles (2002); The Bathers at Priska Juschka Fine Arts, New York (2002); Becoming the Land at the Salina Art Center in Kansas, Human Fields at Brito Cimino Gallery in São Paulo and Silence of Songbirds at Ramis Barquet, New York (2003); and The Promised Land at Galería Ramis Barquet, New York (2005). In 2006 the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio presented Walk #1 and Mourning Circle #2 in its ARTMATTERS series.

Group exhibitions include Family at The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art (2002), Whiteness: A Wayward Construction at the Laguna Art Museum (2003), Reversing Vandalism at the San Francisco Public Library and Water Table at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston (2004), and Birdspace, which travelled from the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans to the Norton Art Museum and The Hudson River Museum (2004). With Galería Ramis Barquet he has shown at ARCO in Madrid and Art Basel Miami Beach, and with Galería Joan Prats of Barcelona at FIA, the Feria Internacional de Arte in Caracas.

Pujol has received fellowships twice from the Cintas Foundation (1991, 1997) and twice from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (1993, 1998), a Joan Mitchell Foundation award (1997), a National Endowment for the Arts Regional Painting Fellowship through the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation (1994) and support from The Cuban Artists' Fund (2002). Early in his career, in 1991, he took part in the Bronx Museum of the Arts' Artist-in-the-Marketplace program and the studio program of the Bronx Council on the Arts.
