2016, Mixed Media, 40 x 14 x 9 In. Mariana Monteagudo’s creative process for her doll sculptures is natural and intuitive. Stepping outside the traditional dolls or Barbies, she goes on scavenger hunts to find materials and inspiration; whether it is the hardware store, a thrift shop, or simply strolling around the neighborhood on trash day. The statuettes reflect on the artist’s life-long held belief with love, perseverance, and creativity, there’s always a place for a second chance for objects. Influences from pre-Columbian aesthetics, fashion, tv pop culture, Japanese manga and mass-market toys can be seen in her work.
