Patricia Schnall Gutierrez
Works & Biography
Cake Sculptures - It comes with no surprise to say that mid-20th century American women, in their role as housewives and mothers, were encouraged to take pride in their cooking and baking skills as they devoted their time and energy to their husbands and children. Marketing companies often showed smiling women baking cakes and looking happy and content to be doing that and nothing else. Instant cake mixes were all the rage and from their invention in the Depression to their postwar popularity, they became an expression of American history, ingenuity, and a timesaving alternative for the typical American housewife. As my role as wife and mother, I made hundreds of boxed cakes over the years while juggling career and family. The notion of repeating this cake form with materials other than batter and frosting became a conduit to alter our perception. Each cake takes on its own meaning and carries with it an undercurrent of the feminine condition.
"Each summer I take a couple of months to travel away from the confines of my studio and go back to nature. Upon returning from a two month stay in the New England countryside in 2018, this series evolved. The influence and tranquility of nature continues to play into my work". Patricia Schnall Gutierrez
Artist Statement
Generation after generation, our roles and duties as women are deeply ingrained in us. Our identities and validations, often defined by others, leave us with inner conflicts. My work explores the feminine character, the stereotypical roles we assume as women, mothers, caretakers and professionals and the myriad consequences we face as a result. The materials I choose to work with accentuate the intent of each of my pieces. I include non-traditional materials, such as steel wool, tracing paper, natural twines and hair, for their inherent opposing qualities of delicacy and strength. Each may be used separately or in tandem with others in various objects, two-dimensional work, installations, and performance pieces. Through these various works, I strive to create an awareness of how women have been defined in the past and the insight this knowledge gives us as we move forward. ABOUT PATRICIA SCHNAL GUTIERREZ The interdisciplinary work of Patricia Schnall Gutierrez (including painting, drawing, sculptural objects, performance, and installation) draws its inspiration from a self-referential account of personal memories, situations, and emotions. Using distinct choices of mediums, household objects and materials, she creates an autobiographical account of the every-day, drawing the viewer into an intimate dialogue that often probes questions of gender and sexuality. Through her personal stories, she shares a unique perspective on controversial issues facing contemporary women and society. Patricia Schnall Gutierrez was born in Buffalo, New York and received a BFA from SUNY Buffalo in1978. After a move to New York City in 1980, she continued her education at the New York Studio School. In 2007, Schnall Gutierrez relocated to South Florida, where she currently lives and works. In 2011, RPM Project was established and Schnall Gutierrez came together with filmmaker Rhonda Mitrani and photographer Marina Font to create, what has now become, a large and well- respected body of large scale multimedia installations and short films. The independent work of Schnall Gutierrez as well her work with RPM Project has been exhibited in numerous art institutions including MOCA Miami, Naples Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Museum of Florida Art, Appleton Museum, Lowe Art Museum, YAA Museum, Patterson Museum, Burchfield Penney Art Center, MADA New Media, as well as numerous University Exhibitions, Art Fairs, and Galleries in and outside of the United States. Schnall Gutierrez has received numerous artist achievement awards and fellowships over the years and has also been included in private and online auctions. |
