Works & Biography
Luisa E. Betancourt (1945) was born in Caracas Venezuela. He father was a businessman by the name of Raúl Betancourt; her mother was Luisa Gallegos, both from Spanish ancestry. Luisa was raised in New York City, she and her brother George were boarding at Saint Claire Academy in Hastings-on-the-Hudson, New York while in grammar school. She studied High School in Canada at Loreto Academy, Niagara Falls Ontario. A year later (1963) she married Alfonso León-Salas from Maracaibo, Venezuela where she lived and raised a family of three children. She became a widow after 44 years of marriage. The loss of her husband made a tremendous impact on her life. She turned her grief into art. The result was Huellas de Vida Show (Traces of life). In 2008 Luisa married again and now makes art with renewed joy.

Luisa Betancourt is a Fulbright scholar with a Master of Fine Arts from Washington State University (1992) she has exhibited intensely in solo and group shows since 1983, combining her artistic career with teaching. In 1999 she founded the Centro Multidiciplinario de Arte Contemporáneo (CEMAC) an art center where artists and students attend seminars and deal with contemporary artistic issues.
Luisa Betancourt, writes frequently about art in art related publications, gives conferences and seminars, and shows her work nationally and internationally. Her work is at several University collections. She has been honored with the Fulbright Fifty Year Button and Universidad del Zulia´s Centenary Button.
She was invited as panelist at the Women’s Caucus for Art Beyond the Boundaries, an international perspective, Seattle WA. 1993. She lives between Maracaibo, Valencia and the cloud forest of Gabante, Venezuela.
