Aldo Castillo Gallery at CONTEXT Art Miami 2019

Aldo Castillo Gallery participated at CONTEXT Art Miami from 3 to 8 December 2019.

In the gallery's own words, director Aldo Castillo offered a strong curatorial statement reflecting his 35 years of experience as both an international art dealer and art fair organizer, and the majority of the works on view had been specifically commissioned by Castillo for CONTEXT Art Miami.

The gallery featured digital photographer Lluis Barba of Spain, sculptor Augusto Esquivel of Argentina, painter Lorna Marsh of South Africa, ceramist Patricia Rieger of the United States and conceptual artist Scott Ashley of the United States.

Consistent with its reputation as one of the most unique and prescient on the international art scene, Aldo Castillo Gallery has been chosen to participate at CONTEXT Art Miami, from December 3-8, 2019.

Lluis Barba, whose work is both a reflection of society and a critique of the problems he believes it generates, draws upon masterpieces of art history in his digital photography. For Context, he has specifically derived inspiration from, among other iconic sources, Grant wood’s painting, “American Gothic”, which celebrates the America of a bygone era, in stark contradiction of today’s body politic. Lorna Marsh, boldly eschewing brush or palette knife and painting directly with her hands to achieve her unique painterly surfaces, explores the human condition, while challenging viewers to reconsider conventional wisdom. Augusto Esquivel appropriates thousands of tiny buttons to create idiosyncratic, sculptural art forms that range from Old Master paintings to objects of popular cultural. The distinguished ceramist Patricia Rieger creates work that is often simultaneously poetic and allegorical. Formally her artistic choices range from highly colored to monochromatic elements, and while frequently figurative, are elegantly enigmatic. Conceptual artist Scott Ashley is known for using everyday objects and familiar cultural constructs to create provocative, emotionally charged multi-media works that challenge our personal and societal perceptions.

CONTEXT Art Miami, the ultimate art fair platform for both emerging and established galleries, along with its sister fair Art Miami, provide a unique opportunity for leading art dealers to showcase, market, and promote internationally a select group of their most important artists working in diverse media, during what is recognized as the most important week for contemporary art in the United States.

Although a newcomer to CONTEXT, with his visionary artistic representation and impressive curatorial choices, Aldo Castillo has firmly established his gallery’s place in the Miami sun.
