This painting draws inspiration from Plate 8 of Francisco de Goya’s celebrated Los Caprichos series, They Carried Her Off! (Que se la llevaron!), published in 1799.

In Goya’s original composition, two men carry away a struggling woman, creating a disturbing image of vulnerability, violence, and the abuse of power. The woman has sometimes been interpreted as a victim of sexual violence, anticipating themes Goya would later confront with even greater brutality in The Disasters of War.

By revisiting this historic image through contemporary painting, the artist brings Goya’s unsettling examination of human behavior into the present, reminding us of the enduring relevance of his critique of violence, injustice, and social cruelty.
