Afternoon Landscape

A blazing amber and crimson ground sets the stage for a world of biomorphic invention in Afternoon Landscape. Kueffel’s gestural vocabulary is on full display: looping black lines, dripping tendrils, and organic forms suggestive of figures, flora, and cosmic debris animate the incandescent field. Yellow suns pulse at the horizon while abstract creatures and plant-like structures entwine across the surface, creating a sense of teeming, hallucinatory life. Painted in 2011, the work exemplifies Kueffel’s synthesis of Abstract Expressionist energy with a distinctly European sensibility, a vision of landscape as pure psychic event.
