JOSÉ ANDRÉS MATO (JAMA) Icarus, 2019 Mixed Media on Canvas
In Icarus, Cuban-born artist José Andrés Mato (JAMA) reinterprets the classical myth of ambition, freedom, and human vulnerability through his distinctive Post-Neo-Expressionist language.
Against a celestial blue background populated by stars, architectural forms, and enigmatic symbols, a monumental figure emerges through bold white contours, geometric patterns, and vibrant contrasts of red and yellow. Drawing upon graffiti, abstraction, and primitive visual traditions, JAMA constructs a symbolic universe in which mythology intersects with philosophical inquiry.
Influenced by Aristotle’s Organon, the artist employs interconnected shapes and cryptic markings to explore the relationship between human existence, knowledge, and the cosmos. Icarus becomes a meditation on humanity’s eternal desire to transcend its limitations—and the consequences of reaching beyond them.
