The work in depth
Centaur, 2008, Porcelain, 14 x 11 x 6 In. $3,200
In Centaur, Emil Alzamora reinterprets classical mythology through a contemporary surrealist lens, transforming the human form through distortion and elongation.
Replacing the traditional bow and arrow with a handgun, the figure’s extended arm creates a provocative dialogue between ancient mythology and modern violence, exploring themes of power, aggression, and humanity’s primal instincts.
The sculpture’s smooth white porcelain surface contrasts with its unsettling imagery, heightening the psychological tension between beauty and brutality. Through this striking juxtaposition, Alzamora bridges Surrealism and Contemporary Art, challenging perceptions of human nature and the enduring relationship between civilization and violence.
