Biography
Rosa Segura
Rosa Segura is a Spanish sculptor born in San Sebastián who lives and works in Madrid. Inspired by the beauty of the art of classical Greece and ancient Egypt, she turned directly to sculpture. She considers herself self-taught as a sculptor, although she has studied art and attended many seminars, specializing in free drawing and modeling at a number of Madrid art schools and attending a sculpture workshop given by Juan Muñoz at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid in 1997.
Her work centers on the figure in relation to the space it occupies: the fight for domination of that space and the strain between form and void, a major theme throughout her sculpture. She became increasingly passionate about sculpting after finding her ideas and feelings mirrored in literature, in particular a work whose main character expressed the feeling of giving shape and substance to an inanimate piece of clay, and little by little she became more deeply involved in the art world, gradually achieving an international reputation.
Segura has held solo exhibitions in Spain, the Netherlands and the United States, including Aldo Castillo Gallery in Chicago in 2005, Ezair Gallery in New York in 2003 and Interart Beeldentuin Gallery in Heeswijk in 2004 and 2008, and has taken part in many collective exhibitions, international art fairs and international open-air sculpture exhibitions in Spain, the United States, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands and Japan. Her work has received several awards, among them first prize for sculpture in the Concurso Iberia 60 Aniversario and the IX Certamen de Artes Plásticas Metro/Club Iberia, and it is held in private and public collections, with pieces on permanent exhibition in galleries in the United States, Canada, Belgium and Holland.
