Biography
Raymundo Andrade
Raymundo Andrade (born 1961, Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico) is a Mexican painter, physician and philosopher. He holds a doctorate in medicine and a doctorate in letters and history, and as a self-taught painter he brings this academic background to his work, which is allegorical and symbolic in character.
His canvases are veiled in a delicate sense of nostalgia, and warm, muted tones suspend his images in a timeless reverie. The paintings pay tribute to both the native and the Spanish cultures that shape Mexico's cultural history, and spiritual, cultural and natural richness and fertility run through his themes. Drawn to the great mysteries of the human condition, Andrade follows the school of the great masters; as he puts it, a brighter palette or a hyper-realistic approach would not carry his paintings in the same way.
Andrade has exhibited extensively in Mexico, the United States and Canada, including California, Arizona and Washington. His work is held in the Bank of America Collection and was included in Miradas: Mexican Art From the Bank of America Collection, a touring survey of 80 years of Mexican art organized by Cesáreo Moreno of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago and shown at the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas, alongside artists such as Diego Rivera, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Graciela Iturbide and Rufino Tamayo.

In the artist’s words
Statement
I don't like making statements about my work, because I don't paint with a concept or a story as a starting point. I start with an image, so it is sometimes difficult to put into words. They (my paintings) are images that I like, it's like the sunset, it's something that strikes you. If I used a brighter palette, or a hyper-realistic approach, my paintings wouldn't come across the same.
