Ramon Chirinos

Ramon Chirinos (born 1950, Falcón, Venezuela) is a Venezuelan painter based in Caracas. He studied mathematics and physics, which led him first down the academic path of teaching before he became a painter, and that training still shapes his work: his paintings combine the balance and planning of mathematics with the creativity and movement of the stories he creates.

Chirinos blends native tradition and European influences, a cultural mélange characteristic of Latin American art. He was strongly influenced by the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, who excelled in portraits, landscapes and monumental works on social and historical themes, and by the Catalan artist Joaquín Mir Trinxet, known for his use of color, who lived through a turbulent period in his native Barcelona and whose paintings helped define the Catalan movement known as modernisme.

From his early figurative paintings to his current abstract work, Chirinos' canvases have a distinctive touch and style, an explosion of colors, forms and lines. He invites the viewer to look calmly at the painting and then to complete the visual process with a deeper perception involving both mind and spirit, making the essence of the visual art stand out through a conscious separation from conventional codes. His contributions are the subject of the monograph Ramon Chirinos by the art critic Bélgica Rodríguez, and his work is collected internationally and continues to influence contemporary artists and collectors.
