Biography
Patricia Schnall Gutierrez
Patricia Schnall Gutierrez (born 1954, Buffalo, New York) is an American multidisciplinary artist working in painting, drawing, sculptural objects, performance, installation and film. She received a BFA cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a concentration in painting and figure drawing, moved to New York City in 1980 and continued her education at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. In 2007 she relocated to South Florida, where she lives and works.
Her work draws on a self-referential account of personal memories, situations and emotions. Using distinct choices of mediums, household objects and materials, she builds an autobiographical chronicle of the everyday that draws the viewer into an intimate dialogue and probes questions of gender and sexuality. Themes of identity, feminine roles, childrearing and aging run through the work as threads of her own experience: her drawings and paintings are intentionally calculated, her sculptures and installations are free-associative, and her performances and films record the stories of herself and the women in her community. Through a prism of intrigue, humor and absurdity she transforms the mundane into the extraordinary and offers a fresh perspective on the narratives that shape women's lives.
In 2011 Schnall Gutierrez co-founded RPM Projects with filmmaker Rhonda Mitrani and photographer Marina Font, a collaborative venture dedicated to multi-sensory female experiences that is best known for large-scale multimedia installations and short films and supports each artist independently and collaboratively.
She has exhibited at MOCA Miami, the Naples Museum of Art, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Museum of Florida Art, the Lowe Art Museum, the Margulies Collection, the Appleton Museum of Art, the Young At Art Museum, the Paterson Museum, the Burchfield Penney Art Center and MADA New Media, as well as in university exhibitions, art fairs and galleries in and outside the United States. In 2024 the Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State University presented her largest museum solo exhibition to date. Her work was selected for the private Sotheby's auction at the Margulies Collection and has been included in other private and online auctions.
Her awards include the Award of Excellence at the Museum of Florida Art's Biennial Six exhibition, an Artist Access Grant from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, a finalist place for the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs Visual Arts Fellowship and several Art Slant Showcase awards. Her work has been featured in Interior Design Magazine, El Nuevo Herald, Art Districts Magazine, Blouin Artinfo and AAL Arte Al Límite, among many other publications.

Statement
Capturing the essence of being female through a prism of intrigue, humor, and absurdity, I offer a fresh perspective on the narratives that shape women's lives. I believe that we have been fractured throughout eras in media and art history, an oversimplification of women that is mere misrepresentation. I navigate the illusion between past and present, creating a contemporary chronicle of life interwoven with memories of joy, sorrow, growth, and introspection. These emotions need not be simplified, they occur as simultaneous phenomena in individuals' lives. Themes of identity, feminine roles, childrearing, and aging are used as threads in the tapestry of my own experiences. My feminine-based approach to viewing and describing the world extends beyond drawing and painting to include sculpture, installation, performance, and film. Drawing and painting are intentionally calculated, while my sculptures and installations are free associative of what it means to be feminine. Performance and film poetically capture collective female consciousness, recording the stories of myself and women in my community. My experimental approach to layering materials and objects draws viewers into deliberate dialogues that probe questions about gender and sexuality. From April 12 through July 12, 2024, I will present my largest museum solo to date at Burchfield Penney Art Center, SUNY Buffalo State University. In my world, I transform the mundane into the extraordinary, infusing the everyday with unexpected twists. My multidisciplinary approach enables me to consider the relationship of material, process, and outcome. My selection of mediums and methods, both used independently and combined, translate into questions and reflections on the diverse facets of being female in a world that is nuanced with challenges. In this large body of work, I address the need for society to honor women fiercely for their many roles.

- Work selected and showcased in the private Sotheby's auction at the Margulies Collection; also included in other private and online auctionsOn the Cake Sculptures, in the artist's words: It comes with no surprise to say that mid-20th century American women, in their role as housewives and mothers, were encouraged to take pride in their cooking and baking skills as they devoted their time and energy to their husbands and children. Marketing companies often showed smiling women baking cakes and looking happy and content to be doing that and nothing else. Instant cake mixes were all the rage and from their invention in the Depression to their postwar popularity, they became an expression of American history, ingenuity, and a timesaving alternative for the typical American housewife. In my role as wife and mother, I made hundreds of boxed cakes over the years while juggling career and family. The notion of repeating this cake form with materials other than batter and frosting became a conduit to alter our perception. Each cake takes on its own meaning and carries with it an undercurrent of the feminine conditionOn the Summer in New England paintings, in the artist's words: Each summer I take a couple of months to travel away from the confines of my studio and go back to nature. Upon returning from a two month stay in the New England countryside in 2018, this series evolved. The influence and tranquility of nature continues to play into my work
