Biography
John Carroll Long
John Carroll Long, born in Michigan in 1950, is an American multidisciplinary artist whose career spans more than five decades. Trained at Eastern Michigan University and Detroit's Center for Creative Studies, he developed his visual voice in Detroit and Ann Arbor before establishing his South Florida studio in 2007.
Long first rose to national prominence in 1985 as a syndicated cartoonist with King Features; his work reached millions through The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post and more than 70 international publications. He is the author of five humor books and an award-winning photographer whose images have appeared on magazine covers, greeting cards, textiles and home decor products.
His fine art practice spans painting, printmaking, what he calls paintography, mixed-media sculpture and immersive installation. The work blends wit with insight, moving fluidly between humor and gravity, playfulness and philosophical depth. Drawing on history, politics, religion, science and a vivid personal mythology of his own, Long strives to "eliminate limitations" and to create art that makes viewers smile, think and feel.
His work has been shown in museum settings, including the Florida Contemporary Artists Exhibition at the Artis-Naples Baker Museum of Art, and at art fairs including Art Naples, Art Basel Miami (Red Dot) and Art Palm Beach. He has been profiled in Art District Magazine, Portfolio Magazine and the Naples Daily News.
