Biography

Hugo Diaz

Hugo Diaz, born in Venezuela in 1965 and based in the United States, is a kinetic artist. He holds a degree in Engineering of Computer Systems from the Metropolitan University in Caracas, Venezuela, and that technical training underlies the precision of his compositions.

His work brings together geometric abstraction, color, lines, light and other elements to create virtual movement: motion that is perceived only from certain angles or sections of a piece. He works in the tradition of the Kinetic Art Movement initiated by masters such as the Israeli artist Yaacov Agam, the French-Hungarian artist Victor Vasarely and the Venezuelans Jesús Rafael Soto and Carlos Cruz-Diez, and his layered plexiglass structures shift as the viewer moves, inviting viewers to experience movement and transformation from every angle.

Diaz works in mixed media on plexiglass, in aluminum with acrylic and enamel paint, and in multi-panel acrylic kinetic pieces, and issues some of his plexiglass towers in small editions. His solo exhibition Art in Motion was presented at Aldo Castillo Gallery in 2023, and his work has been shown at Art Miami.
