Fredy Villamil

Fredy Villamil is a Cuban painter and cartoonist, born in 1980 in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, and now living in Miami. His work merges figuration and abstraction through dynamic lines, vibrant color and complex compositions. Rooted in Cuban traditions and European modernism, his expressive visual language remains deeply personal. It reflects on the enduring role of creativity throughout history, on how artists have transformed human experiences, beliefs and events into visual narratives, and it celebrates art as a universal form of communication that connects generations through shared emotions, ideas and reflections.

As a child Villamil received art lessons from his father, Francis M. Villamil, a painter and teacher of fine arts in Havana. Formal study followed at EVA, Cuba's vocational school of art, and at La Quinta de los Molinos, both in Havana. From childhood he was drawn to Havana's Casa de Cultura, where he widened his artistic circle among emerging and established artists, many of whom, including Rubén Suárez Quidiello, Ángel Boligán, Nuez José M. Delarr, Heriberto Mora, José Luis Posada and Eberto Escobedo, are today renowned among collectors, museums and cultural institutions. Training aside, Villamil considers himself at heart self-taught: his work is born of elements that resist instruction, intuition, emotional connection and memory.

Memory is a potent vestige of the diaspora experience that took him, over many years, from Havana to Mexico and Spain and in 2010 to the United States. Along the way he has exhibited in Mexico, the United States, Turkey, Costa Rica, Iran, India, China, Japan and Azerbaijan, with 22 solo and 61 group exhibitions in Cuba and abroad, and has gathered more than twenty international and 23 national awards, including the Special Prize awarded by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) for his body of work. Living abroad has given his art another dimension, a combination of nostalgia and reflection that immerses the viewer in allegorical metaphors of time and the human condition.

His paintings synthesize figuration, abstraction, line, form and color with a mastery that belies his youthful hand. Beneath light-filled surfaces of scarlet, aqua, emerald green, amethyst and topaz, crackling with fractured lines and colliding shapes, lies a kaleidoscopic vision of biomorphic and organic forms with no beginning and no end; looked at closely, this dizzying array of tiny components resolves into a carefully constructed motif anchored in deep space. Villamil embraces Europe's art historical traditions of figuration, full length and truncated, frontal and profile, single and conjoined, composing recumbent nudes, women with fans, fashionable damas in fantastical hats and mothers tending babies. He draws inspiration from the women of his own family, and each work is a soulful, even meditative reflection on a family member held dear.

Although he left Havana years ago, the cultural roots of his homeland profoundly shape his art. He acknowledges the influence of the Cuban Vanguardia masters Cundo Bermúdez, René Portocarrero, Amelia Peláez and Wifredo Lam, and of European modern masters such as Picasso and Klee, drawing on the multiple viewpoints of Cubism and the mosaic-like patterns of Surrealism without letting any single homage dominate. Critics have found in his forms the cries and tears of Munch, Paul Klee and Ernst Barlach, pioneers of expressionism, delivered with a personal touch that takes only the outward appearance of things in order to distort or intensify it and reveal spiritual and emotional experience.

Villamil has gained international recognition through exhibitions including the 3rd Biennial of Art in Barcelona and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, both in 2019, and through art fairs in Europe and the United States, including Art Miami from 2023 to 2026 with Aldo Castillo Gallery. His solo exhibitions include Chiaroscuro (2019), Dreams & Muses (2022) and Echoes of a Dreaming Muse (2025). He received the Palm Art Award Certificate of Excellence in 2021, and in 2026 he was selected for the 27th Japan-France Contemporary Art World Exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo.
