Felipe Castañeda is a Mexican sculptor, born in 1933 in the state of Michoacán, where he remains based. A prominent artist of his generation, he is celebrated for his masterful carvings in onyx, marble and bronze.
Castañeda studied at Mexico's National Institute of Fine Arts, graduating in 1963, and worked as an assistant to Francisco Zúñiga, who was in turn influenced by Auguste Rodin.
Women and the female body are his abiding subjects: pregnancy and maternal motifs, along with nude figures, are his most common themes. He frequently references the pre-Columbian artifacts prevalent in Michoacán, while his fascination with sensual beauty and the perfect proportions of his figures aligns his aesthetic with classical Greco-Roman sculpture.
His sculptures have been shown at international art fairs including SOFA Chicago and Art Miami.
