Biography
Emiliano Gironella Parra
Emiliano Gironella Parra is a multidisciplinary Mexican artist, born in Mexico City in 1972, the son of the artists Alberto Gironella and Carmen Parra. Raised in that artistic family, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in Mexican cultural experience. He graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he studied sculpture, photography and engraving.
Since then he has worked across a wide range of media: painting in oil and watercolor, lithography and screen printing, wood carving, video and light installation, among others. His work delves into quintessentially Mexican subjects such as bullfighting, cockfighting and cantina culture, building visual narratives that blend popular and literary themes, and he uses this range of media to comment on tradition, violence and social injustice in Mexico.
Gironella Parra is internationally recognized for his dialogues and writings about Artempatía, or Empathy Art, and for his diverse social artistic practice. His work offers a vibrant, critical perspective on Mexican social realities, drawing on personal experience and broader cultural contexts, and his exhibitions and publications across Mexico, the United States and Spain have established him as a significant contemporary Mexican artist.
