Biography
Eduardo Guelfenbein
Eduardo Guelfenbein is a Chilean painter and multimedia artist, born in Santiago in 1953, who has lived and worked in Paris since 2003. Educated in England, he graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan in 1977. His career has been shaped by an international journey through England, Italy, Australia and France, a dialogue between cultures that gives his work a visual language reaching beyond geographical boundaries.
His mesmerizing, repetitive painting surfaces evoke the rhythm of waves or the cosmos. He composes boldly colorful scenes from thickly applied swirls of acrylic paint, and his subjects have moved from recognizable imagery, such as portraits and landscapes, toward abstract explorations of color combinations. Influenced by the landscapes of Latin America, European music and dance, his compositions unite energy with refined elegance through luminous color, dynamic movement and lyrical rhythm, and turn on themes of love, beauty, harmony and the human spirit.
Guelfenbein has exhibited widely across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia. He was included in the 1992 Paris Biennale, had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago, Chile, in 1997, and was given a retrospective at the University of Brest in 2005.
