Apostol's art is contemporary, unconventional and filled with meaning and purpose beyond the aesthetic result
that just pleases the eye. Each piece is an original creation.
When one study the work of Greek artist Apostol Nikolakopoulos, who signs his work simply "Apostol," it is easy to see the far-reaching influence of American rock ‘n roll. It is far more challenging to understand how this former economist also translates metal and glass into complex interpretations of the sea and nature. Apostol, is an artist from Greece for over 30 years with galleries in Athens and in Oia, Santorini. Apostol's works are in private collections in homes from around the world, including a recent purchase by Madonna.
Working with the ancient lost-wax casting process, Apostol, creates molds for bronze sculptures that range from less than two feet to over twelve feet in height in his Athens foundry. His bronze castings, using the lost-wax process are enhanced with variations of glass, aluminum and silver. He is known for perfecting the technique of large bronze casting, adding then glass and also inserting the crystal pieces into the crevices of his sculptures creating a vibrant refraction between the metal and glass.
When asked about the source of his creativity, Apostol says: "The best ideas come to me when I am not intentionally thinking about what my next work will look like."
