About Nancy Iannitelli
When pressed to describe her work, this gifted artist will shift uncomfortably in the limelight and will, with a casual wave of her painting hand, downplay her remarkably varied style and broad skill-set as “eclectic”. However, upon delving into the whopping collection she’s created over 40 years of study and practice, one ascertains, quickly, that Nancy Iannitelli is simply one of those incredulously talented people who can use any raw assemblage of media elements to produce a masterpiece.
While it’s true that she boasts a wealth of conventional, crowd-pleasing showpieces in her portfolio, more recently her artistic vigor has skyrocketed with works of Abstract Expressionism, motivated by a newfound sentiment of artistic freedom. This new collection, she will tell you, has been a long time coming. “It took me years to get to this point, to be able to paint freely like this and to defy what I was taught.”
While this loaded statement might sound as if she’s thrown over the traditional techniques garnered through her rigorous study of art, she’s quick to explain that this is not the case. “I use every bit of knowledge I have from the old masters,” she says. The defiance of which she speaks isn’t in the choosing of the paintbrush per se, but in the motivating force she finally has allowed to drive her artistry: herself.
“For the first time in my life, I’ve not let (anyone else) get in the way. Now I’m alone, with no one looking over my shoulder telling me what I should do,” she says. “Now I paint only to express my inner spirituality, without a need to please anyone else.” Nancy’s spirituality “… is influenced by a higher power that I have discovered later in life. It’s one I probably had as a child, but covered up. Suddenly, I felt like I was able to go back to being a child, but with some wisdom, appreciating things in a childlike way.”
Upon further reflection, she elucidates that, despite her newly cultivated artistic freedom, she’s not immune to those who consider her work. “It’s always gratifying when people are moved and make comments on my work, negative or positive. That means it did something to them. It means they noticed it.” Nancy’s hope is that upon seeing her latest works, viewers are drawn to let their minds wander, using their own imaginations to discover what they may see on the canvas.
