John Carroll Long (American, b. 1950, Michigan)
, is a dynamic multidisciplinary artist whose career spans more than five decades. Trained at Eastern Michigan University and Detroit’s Center for Creative Studies, Long developed his visual voice in Detroit and Ann Arbor before establishing his South Florida studio in 2007. Long first rose to national prominence in 1985 as a syndicated cartoonist with King Features. His work reached millions through The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and more than 70 international publications. He is the author of five humor books and an award-winning photographer whose images have appeared on magazine covers, greeting cards, textiles, and home décor products. Today, Long is celebrated for a fine art practice that includes painting, printmaking, mixed-media sculpture, and immersive installation. His work blends wit with insight, inviting audiences into a world that moves fluidly between humor and gravity, playfulness and philosophical depth. Drawing on history, politics, religion, science, and a vivid personal mythology, Long strives to “eliminate limitations” and create art that makes viewers smile, think, and feel. His work has been exhibited in major museum settings, including the Florida Contemporary Artists Exhibition at the Artis—Naples Baker Museum of Art.

John Carroll Long (American, b. 1950, Michigan)
For more than five decades, John Carroll Long has built a multifaceted career as a visual artist. Trained at Eastern Michigan University and Detroit’s Center for Creative Studies, he worked in Detroit and Ann Arbor before relocating to South Florida in 2007. Long first gained national recognition in 1985 as a syndicated cartoonist with King Features, with his work appearing in The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and over 70 international outlets. He is also the author of five humor books and a prize-winning photographer, with images published on magazine covers, greeting cards, textiles, and household products.
His fine art portfolio—spanning paintings, prints, “paintography,” mixed-media sculpture, and installations—reflects his wit and curiosity. Moving between humor and seriousness, playfulness and depth, Long explores history, politics, religion, science, and his own surreal mythology. His guiding mission: to “eliminate limitations” and create works that invite viewers to smile, think, and feel.
EXHIBITIONS

His work has been featured in major museum exhibitions, including the Florida Contemporary Artists Exhibit at the Artis-Naples Baker Museum of Art, as well as international art fairs such as Art Naples, Art Basel Miami (Red Dot), and Art Palm Beach.
